The Rhodes Rugby team looked to turn their varsity shield pursuit around when they took on the University of Fort Hare (FH) at the Great Field.
Varsity Cup/Shield Rules: Try with conversions are worth 8 points and penalties are worth 2 in order to encourage running rugby and try scoring.
Kick off began at 18h30.
7′ Try Fort Hare 0-5
30′ Two Yellow Cards for Fort Hare; One Yellow Card for Rhodes
Half time: Rhodes has performed well defensively. The forwards have been excellent at the breakdown recycling ball quickly and preventing turnovers. The backs from Rhodes have done themselves a disservice in terms of handling errors resulting in unsuccessful ball retention. One try in the half coming from a strong scrumming effort from Fort Hare. The half was momentarily halted with 10 minutes to go where both teams lost frustration with one another and a fist fight ensued.
Fort Hare’s speedy wingers have threatened Rhodes but Rhodes have been equal to the task with a persistent and effective defensive system.
42′ intercept try Rhodes conversion Rhodes 8-5 FH
50′ penalty Rhodes 10-745′ penalty FH 8-7
53′ Try FH 10-12 conversion 10-15
70′ Penalty FH 10-17
72′ Try FH 10-22 Conversion 10-25
75′ Try FH 10-30
Full time: At the close of the game the score hardly reflects a valiant Rhodes effort. Defensively they were excellent with the tries from the opposition coming off handling errors. The only Rhodes Try came in the 42nd minute from a brilliantly read interception from the Rhodes 8th man. A testing fixture for both teams and Rhodes conceding the spoils.
