The Rustic Route Food Market, a place for everyone!
Sitting down with the manager of the Rustic Route in preparation for an historic moment in Grahamstown food culture. The food market has busted down the door of the local food industry.
This is admittedly my second visit in 3 weeks, yet again it was a faultless experience. On my first visit the waiter explained that The Rustic Route was not a place in which you only come to eat any particular type of meal, no sir, this is a food market. It’s not exactly rocket science, if you want a mound of home cooked food or an ice cold or even a Featherstone Craft beer, you can take a walk over to each of the individual stalls and bars. This place is built for Grahamstown. Your taste is not confined to one style or even mood, at any point of the day you can pop in to see how ya feel.
Service was attentive, and personal and it was just really quite delightful that my server remembered me from the last visit! The place is innovative and has really beautifully cooked and presented food. Staff are knowledgeable and rather fun, it’s lovely to see people enjoy their job! You should see how Louis Pieterse (Manager) face lights up when he starts speaking about the place. The man is happy. Food is promptly served and cooked to perfection. A nice selection of drinks were on offer in a lovely atmosphere- what more do you need?
The detail in the décor is absolutely stunning. The furniture has been collected for more than 20 years after the conception of the idea by Marian and Chris van Aardt, the owners. This is entrepreneurial finesse of the highest quality. It is not surprising that the place has become a bit of an overnight success. There is not going to be a slow season for The Rustic Route.
Louis Pieterse had the following to say:
“We have such a variety of people in Grahamstown. The Rustic Route is a place for everyone. We want to carter to a wide variety of customers. The idea here is that people get together; friends, business colleagues and family. We want them to come here and Kuier (Afrikaans).
We have different stalls. We have the coffee shop, the brew, cakes and biscuits. We have the scoop, where we serve our own ice cream. We serve home cooked meals, which is just your mama’s food. You would want to come eat here because it is really home cooked meals. For the health conscious, we serve smoothies, salads and also vegetarian beetroot burger, which is amazing. Lastly, at least for now, we also serve burgers and hotdog rolls. Obviously. With slap chips. We are starting small and we want to build on our menu.”
It is a pleasure to experience something that has been made not just for you, but also for Grahamstown.
