F11 was victory during Rhodes University’s annual Saint Patrick’s Day soccer tournament, which was held on Saturday 12 March on King’s Fields. The tournament serves as the pre-season tournament for the Rhodes Internal Soccer League which will begin next semester.
The first game was between Centenary and Phoenix Kings in which the latter prevailed. However, a 3-0 loss to Abu Dhabi saw Phoenix Kings – once reigning champions – out of the tournament in their second game of the day.
Joe Slovo then took on Big 11 and lost 3-1.
The game between Cory Matthews and Jan Smuts ended in a penalty shootout, in which Cory Matthews beat Smuts 3-2.
Rhodes Staff took on MSA with a tied game of 0-0, which led to a penalty shootout in which Rhodes Staff won 5-4.
Retief and F11 played to a 1-1 draw, with goals scored by Retief’s Asanda Cele and F11’s Njongwezintle Baba. F11 won the penalty shootout with a 4-3.
De Beers then beat Shandis with a goal by De Beer’s Zukile Bunzi.
Cullen Bowles beat KDM FC with a score of 1-0.
The first round of the quarter finals was between Cory Mathews and Abu Dhabi. The 1-1 draw led to a penlty shooutout, which ended in a 4-4 tie. The game ended in a sudden death round which was won by Abu Dhabi.
The second quarter final was between F11 and Hilltop in which a goal by F11’s Njongwezintle Baba won the game for F11 and saw them go on to the semi-finals.
Goldfields took on last year’s reigning champions Hilltop FC, winning 1-0. The goal by Eto Dube earned Goldfields a spot in the semi-finals.
The final was between F11 and De Beers. F11 took home the trophy with a 2-1 win.
