On Friday the 9th of September, reigning champions Heathens faced off against Dream Team in the Rhodes Internal Rugby league final. Dream, however, validated their name by beating Heathens 17-8.
Dream opened the scoring in the 8th minute, after Charlie Gird scored a penalty. Shortly afterwards Heathens were also awarded a penalty, which was scored by Jurgen Stroebel. Both teams came closing to scoring but at half time the score remained 3-3.
Six minutes into the second half, Dream scored the first try of the game, courtesy of Siviwe Gushu. A successful conversion added an extra two points.
The stands were filled with hundreds of Rhodes Students, cheering on their respective teams throughout the game. Heathens put in a tremendous amount of effort but failed to break through Dream’s defence.
As the game entered its final stages, Brad Pieter narrowly missed a chance to give Dream their second try and widen the scoring gap. He redeemed himself a minute later, scoring the final try of the game. Ryan Horne added the final two points with a conversion, sealing the victory for Dream at 17-8.
