Steroids for your brain

We all have our own tips and tricks for improving our academic performance. From eating brain food to drawing mind maps, the sentiment amongst students seems to be that anything goes, as long as the results reflect it. When you think of the term ‘academic performance-enhancing drugs’, what comes to mind? Coffee and cigarettes? Ritalin and Adderall? Or do you envision a futuristic situation in which increased brain capacity, improved memory and enhanced cognition are only a pill away? The truth is that all these scenarios are a reality. (more…)

The passing of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs on 5 October 2011 was met by widespread mourning and a flurry of tributes to the great man. He brought us the Mac computer, the iPod, the iPhone and most recently, the iPad.
Below is the speech that Jobs gave at the commencement ceremony for Stanford’s Graduating class in 2005. It epitomises his policy running of Apple and the living of his life.

Imagine the ocean. Now imagine a fishing boat on that ocean. Imagine this boat throwing its fishing net into the ocean, collecting all the fish on top of the surface. In short, this ocean is in fact the entire internet. Much like the continual discovery of our oceans, we realise that the ocean is in fact so vast that we cannot (at this point in time) imagine what lies beneath. (more…)
