Attempted Arson on campus

Mitchell Shaun Parker

In the early hours of this morning, two fires were started at the south entrance to the Council Chambers in the main administrative building. The fire was started with an inflammable substance.

The incident took place shortly after the building was unlocked for the day by the Campus Protection Unit – at roughly 6:45am. CPU noticed the smell of the fire and quickly extinguished the flames. No significant damage has been done, but the SAPS and Fire Department are investigating and a Police Forensic Unit is expected on site shortly.

The area has currently been cordoned off.

In his latest Vice-Chancellor’s circular, detailing the event, Dr Sizwe Mabizela makes clear that “The University condemns all forms of violence, arson and destruction of property.”
